MILK DEFICIENCY
Deficiency of milk might survive even at a very early period afterward deliverance, and yet be dispatched. This, however, isn’t to be achieved by the substance too often resorted to; for it’s the custom with many, 2 or 3 weeks later their confinement, whenever the issue of nutrition for the infant is meager, to partake mostly of malt for its growth. Sooner or later this would be found harmful to the constitution of the mother: but however, then, is this deficiency to be avoided? Allow the nurse keep but in healthiness, and this detail acquired, the milk, both as to measure and quality, will be as sufficient, nutritious, and good, as could be developed by the individual.
For 3 or 4 days it was a enquiry whether the brief one would alive, for so greatly had it been abridged by the looseness of the bowels that it hadn’t enduringness to grasp the nipple of its nurse; the milk, therefore, was obligated to be drawn, and the baby fed with it from a spoon. Afterward the lapse of a couple of days, however, it could obtain the breast-milk for itself; and, to attain light of the case, during as is month, the mother and baby brought back home, the early bearing a precise average proportionality of healthy milk in her bosom, and the child absolutely well and obviously healthy fast upon it.
Where, however, there’s been an early insufficiency in the provision of nutrition, it would most frequently occur that, earlier the 6th or 7th month, the infant’s requires would be greater than the mother can get together. The insufficiency must be assembled by artificial nutrient, which must be of a variety in general employed before the 6th month, and given direct the bottle.
